I received a freelancing request last night, and the communication spilled over to this morning.
The request was to create a 15,000 word piece on female masturbation. In the job spec, they were looking for writers from the UK, USA, or Canada, and wanted a number of sample pieces before the interview process began.
This came through oDesk (a freelancing site that I used at the start of my career and still keep a profile on). I don’t actively seek out work on oDesk any more, but I do keep the profile up and running as sometimes those looking for adult writers come across my info, then make their way to my site. I tend to brace myself when I get oDesk job interview requests through, for a number of reasons. First, it’s not unheard of for the interviewees to take the samples you send them and do a runner. Get 100 people applying to a job, you’ve got yourself 100 free pieces of writing. The site is also used by a large number of contractors from countries where the standard of living is quite low, and as a result, the payment rates are very minimal. I’ve often seen writing jobs posted for less than half a penny a word.
Given the fact that the job poster was very specific about wanting native-English speaking writers, though, I was thrown for a bit of a loop with the offer – $250, or around $0.017 per word. I usually just click the ‘Decline’ button on these and send the reason as “Rate Too Low”, leaving it at that. For some reason, I thought I’d find out a bit more about this, so I accepted the interview and sent this message. Keep going…I want more…

Fifty Shades of Grey – not a single book has divided the erotica and BDSM community more in the last fifty years as this one. Yes, I have read it – more than once. Do I think it’s ‘bad’ for the erotica and bondage lifestyle? In a way, yes. Did I enjoy reading it? Kind of. Am I riding out the insane popularity of this set of novels like the cash cow rodeo that it is? OF COURSE I AM!
I’m not joking in the slightest when I say that every single employer I have worked with in the last three months wants pieces relating to the 50 Shades novels. People who I have contracted with in the past who have NO connection to BDSM are trying to find ways to get the traffic from the Fifty Shades phenomenon. I’ve even bought into the hype and dabbled with my own possible way to cash in (outside of my writing, of course).
Credit to @HypnoPeter on Twitter for this image!
In the last 90 days, I have:
- Rewritten Fifty Shades of Grey scenes in order to make them more ‘hardcore’ and ‘lifestyle friendly’ for BDSM porn sites, as a guide for their movies
- Added Fifty Shades themed keywords to existing sex toy descriptions to hook into the Google traffic
- Created shopping lists and how-to guides for sex toy web sites trying to get the attention of new shoppers
- Designed and ghostblogged an entire new website from the point of view of a ‘first time reader’ for another sex toy shop (with posts pointing them in the direction of their store)
- Ghostwritten two fan-fic style erotica novels using the 50 Shades characters to be sold on Amazon
- Started my own affiliate web site for a major bondage furniture web site using a Fifty Shades theme
I kinda feel like a bit of a whore about this whole thing. Fifty Shades is this awfully written book that is spreading misconceptions about the bondage and dominance community, yet I’m playing it out for every single penny it can give me.

I’m glad to say that in a couple of week’s time, I’ll be headed down to London to be part of Erotic Meet’s First Birthday celebrations. While I don’t get down to the ‘dirty South’ very often, I was convinced to go by a few friends I met at Eroticon.
For those who don’t know, Erotic Meet describes itself as ”a social network for people working creatively within the erotic field”. I’m looking forward to the chance to catch up with writers I met in Bristol, as well as making a few new friends and acquaintances. Networking in erotica is also a biggie for me, and I think this is an opportunity not to miss out on. I’m hoping, as well, that there may be a few folks in the pornography industry that I can catch up with, since there still seems to be a major underground existence to us porno writers!
If you’re attending, please let me know. I’d love to meet a few of the webmasters & readers who read my site. You can catch me on twitter as @RubyGoodnight, or drop me a message through the Contact Me page.

While at Eroticon this weekend, something came up that I think deserves a bit of a discussion. While watching a S&M demo, I looked around the room at the audience in attendance, and noticed that there were a few members who did not seem comfortable with the situation. After the demo was done, there was a brief discussion about what we (as the audience) just saw. One individual brought up what I had noticed. In turn, Rubyyy Jones asked those in attendance who had never seen an actual session before.
A small number in attendance raised their hands. Rubyyy then asked those who had their hands in the air if they had ever written about BDSM before. The conversation kind of fizzled out from there, which was a shame, since it really could have expanded on the concept as a whole – do some fetish authors write without experiencing the activities they write about, and on a lesser note, does the reader ever notice the difference?
Keep going…I want more…

I had an amazing time at Eroticon this weekend. It’s given me a much needed battery recharge and reaffirmed that what I do is valid, appreciated, and profitable. Rather than go into a long journaling session, I thought I’d list a few thoughts I had about my experiences at this erotica writer’s conference.
Keep going…I want more…

I do love kitschy erotica!

While jet lag can be quite the pain in the ass, I’ve found myself in that dream-like state where you come up with the most out-there concepts which seem to make perfect sense at the time. Lucky for me, I’ve been writing all of these down, in the hopes of when my post-Transatlantic-flight haze passes, I can use some of the ideas for story lines. At the very least, I’ll see something quite humorous, even if I can’t use them for any erotica story ideas.
Luckily, I’ve given myself two more days to recover back to normal before I start taking on any of the new projects that have come across my desk while I’ve been away. I know I wouldn’t be comfortable creating adult content in my current state!
I’m also going to take the time and trim some of the fat off. I have a few lingering contracts where the employer hasn’t been in touch for weeks, so I need to clear my plate and get going with newer and more naughty erotica and adult writing!

One of the best things about being a fetish erotica writer is turning to the internet for inspiration. I don’t live the lifestyle 24/7 as I used to do back in ‘the day’, but part of me very much longs to be placed in positions like the lovely subs here find themselves in. Sinful Sunday (#SinfulSunday) is a great way for me to vicariously get into ‘sub space’ and create a more life-like portrayal in my erotica ebooks and stories. I must thank Miss Molly (and her Master for allowing her to do this) for her weekly inspiration!
Here are a few of my favorites today…
Molly herself in the holiday spirit – quite PG, but still lovely.
A wonderful use of nipples that quite resemble mine.
More nipples. For me, nipple torture is one of the best pleasure / pain areas of the body.
I do love a gorgeous corset and stocking set, as well.
I’m always looking for creative ways to have my characters hide their equipment. This is one I LOVE.

It’s been quite a week! I’m getting ready for a much-needed trip to go back and see my family in the USA. Hopefully it will recharge my erotica batteries and I’ll return with a head full of fun fetish stories to tell. I’ve been involved with a large ongoing project lately, working with a UK web master, creating content for her series of dating sites. It’s a much needed niche that I’m glad to be involved with! I’ve updated my portfolio with these dating site description excerpts for you to check out.
